PRIMROSE FLOWERS IN THE SPRING

Naturalised yellow primrose flowers (primula vulgaris) brighten up a sunny spring day. The perennial plants are a welcome sight in shaded hedgerows, open woods and gardens in springtime in the UK countryside. As it is an early flower its name derives from the Latin for first rose. The native wildflower has a basal rosette of wrinkled green leaves with pin or thrum flowers with pale yellow petals and a rich yellow throat. It is the county flower of Devon. A protected plant it is illegal to pick or remove them from the wild in the UK. Macro shot taken in a woodland garden on the North Devon and Cornwall border, SW England, UK
