A feeling of solitude and peace on the beach. Muted colours with the blurring of land sea & sky with the person walking their dog in the distance in splendid isolation enjoying the vast space surrounding them. The golden Saunton Sands beach is huge and makes you feel quite insignificant in the whole scheme of things. Stretching for 3.5 miles it is popular with surfers. The beach is backed by Braunton Burrows an unusual and extensive sand dune system so rare a habitat that it is part of a UNESCO World biosphere. The beach is long enough for the RAF to land Hercules transport planes. During the Second World War some 10,000 or more American GIs trained here for their assault on Omaha and Utah beaches during the D-Day landings in France. Various music artists have filmed videos here. The coast the other side of Bideford Bay towards Hartland Point can be seen in the distance.
