SUNSET AT SAUNTON SANDS BEACH DEVON
A tranquil winter sunset at the spectacular Saunton Sands Beach in North Devon, SW England, UK. A few people are enjoying the peaceful fading light down on the beach. The golden sand beach is vast, stretching for 3.5 miles and is popular with surfers. The beach is backed by Braunton Burrows an unusual and extensive sand dune system so rare a habitat that it is part of a UNESCO World biosphere.
The beach is long enough for the RAF to land Hercules transport planes. During the Second World War some 10,000 or more American GIs trained here for their assault on Omaha and Utah beaches during the D-Day landings in France. Various music artists have filmed videos here.
The coast the other side of Bideford Bay towards Hartland Point can be seen in the distance. Taken one winter's day in February.
